FREE Teaching Tolerance Resources

Twice a year I get a free magazine called Teaching Tolerance. According to the website, “Teaching Tolerance is dedicated to reducing prejudice, improving intergroup relations and supporting equitable school experiences for our nation’s children (by)  providing free educational materials to teachers and other school practitioners in the U.S. and abroad.”

In addition to the  magazine, they also develop and distribute tens of thousands FREE curricular kits for students K-12! I just ordered A Time for Justice, a DVD & lesson resource by “four-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Charles Guggenheim who captures the spirit of the civil rights movement through historical footage and the voices of those who participated in the struggle.” In addition, teachers at Wildwood & Lake Drive may consider Starting Small, a training tool for early grades educators that profiles classrooms in which peace, equity and justice are guiding themes. The kit includes a 58-minute film in DVD format with closed-captioning; and 250-page text with classroom profiles, commentary, activities and a resource guide.”

Also, this month’s magazine explores how schools can make physical education classes more inclusive. And James W. Loewen, author of the bestselling book Lies My Teacher Told Me, writes about the true causes of the Civil War. This issue also offers tips on defending arts education, debates the use of the ‘N-word’ in literature classes, and discusses the growth in secular student clubs. For the 20th anniversary, the magazine introduces new departments, like ‘Ask Teaching Tolerance,’ an advice column, and ‘Down the Hall,’ in which administrators, counselors and librarians are profiled.”
